Yanna Hadatty Mora

Yanna Hadatty Mora (Guayaquil, 1969) is an Ecuadorian short story writer, essayist, and literary critic. Based in Mexico since 1992, she earned her Doctorate in Ibero-American Literature from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Her work focuses on the study of Latin American avant-garde literature, particularly in Ecuador and Mexico, and she has published extensively on these subjects, including the critical essays Autofagia y narración (2003) and La ciudad paroxista (2009). Hadatty has also contributed to numerous anthologies and continues to teach and conduct research at UNAM.

Early Life and Education

Yanna Hadatty Mora was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, in 1969. She moved to Mexico in 1992 to pursue higher education, where she developed a distinguished academic and literary career. Hadatty earned her Doctorate in Ibero-American Literature from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 2002. Her doctoral thesis became the foundation for her first major critical work, Autofagia y narración.

Literary and Academic Career

Hadatty has made significant contributions to the study of Latin American avant-garde literature, focusing particularly on 20th-century narrative strategies. Since 1995, her research has centered on the representation of Ibero-American avant-garde literature, with a particular focus on Mexican and Ecuadorian narratives. She has authored or co-authored 94 research papers.

She has taught at several prestigious institutions in Mexico, including the University of the Cloister of Sor Juana and the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-Xochimilco. At UNAM, she has coordinated multiple academic programs on Hispanic avant-garde literature from 2001 to 2004. She currently serves as a full-time researcher at UNAM’s Institute of Philological Research and continues to teach in the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters.

Hadatty has been a member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers since 2005 and is a full member of the House of Ecuadorian Culture. She also serves as the Executive Secretary of the Association of Ecuadorianists in Mexico.

Contributions to Literary Criticism and Research

Yanna Hadatty Mora is recognized for her critical insights into Latin American modernism, particularly the avant-garde movements in Ecuador and Mexico. Her work has been presented at national and international conferences in Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, France, and more. She has collaborated with many research projects and has contributed critical essays to numerous publications.

Her key scholarly works include Autofagia y narración. Estrategias de representación en la narrativa vanguardista iberoamericana (1922–1935) (2003), La ciudad paroxista. Prosa mexicana de vanguardia (1921–1932) (2009), and Prensa y literatura para la Revolución: La Novela Semanal de El Universal Ilustrado (1922-1925) (2016), which examines the relationship between literature and the media during the Mexican Revolution.

Literary Works

In addition to her critical research, Hadatty is a talented short story writer. Her collection Quehaceres postergados was first published in 1998, with a second edition released in 2005. Her fiction and essays have been included in several anthologies, such as Cuento contigo (1993), Cuentan las mujeres. Antología de narradoras ecuatorianas (2001), and 40 cuentos ecuatorianos (1997).

Legacy and Influence

Hadatty’s work has been translated into English and Portuguese, expanding her international presence as a scholar and author. She continues to explore Latin American avant-garde literature, further solidifying her reputation as a critical voice in this field. Her editorial work, including her role as a co-coordinator of Historia de las literaturas en México (2019), highlights her influence on contemporary literary scholarship.

Recognitions and Accolades

Hadatty’s contributions have earned her numerous accolades. In addition to her membership in the National System of Researchers in Mexico, she is highly active in academic circles, coordinating seminars such as the Permanent Research Seminar on Latin American Magazines (ESPIRAL) at UNAM.
